Sint-Bernarduskerk

It is a Neoromanesque construction from 1923, built as replacement for a similar church building dated 1877. Not only during the First but also during the Second World War the church has been damaged heavily. The repairs from 1947 also determine the actual look. The gables of yellow brick rest on a base of hard stone. The stylistic difference with the Gothic churches of Nieuwpoort-Stad and Sint-Joris is clearly visible with only one look. Semicircular arches are dominating in the Romanesque style, whereas the ornamentation usually is minimal. Nevertheless, the style purity is rather harmed by using buttresses against the body of the tower and the aisles, an element from the Gothic style.
