Municipal Hall

Next to the town hall on the market place is the Nieuwpoort grain hall, better known as municipal hall.
This building was classified by Royal Decree of 25th March 1938. One assumes that there was already a hall on the same place since 1280. This is a clear proof of the booming trade life of the coastal town in the past.
Through the years, the hall was destroyed repeatedly. The last destruction dates from the First World War. Afterwards the municipal hall was built up again in 1920 in its original style and with the original material. Not long ago, several museums were housed here, but since the latest restoration in 1999, the hall is only functioning as temporary exhibition hall and as exquisite decoration for festive receptions by the municipal administration.
