Dunes
Only a small part of the dunes of Nieuwpoort, i.e. the western part connecting to the Carthusian dunes of Oostduinkerke, can be used for leisure and is spatially bordered by the following streets: Elisalaan, Sint-Bernardusplein, Georges Rodenbachlaan, Emile Verhaerenlaan, Louisweg and Kinderlaan. The highest tops rise about 20 m above sea level. However, the average height varies between 6 and 10 m. Only some plants, i.e. marram grass and rush grass, are physiologically adapted to germinate and grow on the sterile sand. Thanks to an expanded root system, they offer a certain protection and stability to this strip of dunes.
West of the town of Nieuwpoort and bordering to the Canadalaan you will find a second dune area being hardly known. We mean the Littobos (small wood) growing on the "average-old dunes" hardly sticking out above the surrounding polders.
