Four Days March of the Yser
24 - 27 August 2011
The Belgian Defence organizes every year the ‘Four Days of the Yser’. This is an international march for military and civilians.
There are three main goals:
• To strengthen the bond between the military and the civilians by means of a sport event
• To commemorate the victims of WWI and WWII
• To promote the Westhoek
The 14th Regiment anti-aircraft artillery from Nieuwpoort and the logistic competence centre in Ieper organise the ‘Four Days of the Yser’, supported by the cities of Koksijde, Nieuwpoort, Diksmuide, Poperinge en Ieper.
Every day there’s a walk of 16km and a walk of 32km with a fixed pattern.
The opening ceremony takes place in Koksijde-Oostduinkerke because this municipality holds the roots of the ‘Four Days of the Yser’.
The first walk start here and pass traditionally by Nieuwpoort.
The other walks start in Diksmuide, Poperinge and Ieper.
The closing ceremony upon the arrival of the last day takes place in Ieper followed by the parade of the participants.
